21st Century Work Readiness: Voices from Higher Education

Today’s increasingly competitive global knowledge economy has changed what secondary schools need to provide their students. Together our goal is to ensure our students are prepared with the skills and knowledge necessary to find success in the 21st century. Come participate in a discussion led by a panel of college and university professors speaking about what it means to educate for global citizenship.

Moving Schools toward Global Education for all Students: Challenges and Opportunities

As more schools consider how to provide a global education for all their students, school leaders are confronted with the challenge of integrating this work into today's high accountability environment. This session will explore these challenges and consider how they can be viewed as opportunities. There will also be a specific focus on school and district culture, with discussion about moving the global education agenda forward.

Research, Explore and Create Anywhere with Global Collaboration

It's easier than ever for students to investigate earth’s wonders with just a few simple tools, a sense of curiosity and adventure, and the right use of social media. In this session we will explore how to connect your students to experts, museums and even other classrooms around the globe through video conferencing tools. We will also examine globally connected classrooms that are taking the Common Core’s concepts of curiosity, critical thinking, creating and collaborating beyond the final frontier. Be prepared to take your imagination on an incredible journey as you develop opportunities for your own students in this session.

Making Your Impact on the Map: Linking Classroom Service Learning to Your Local Community and Beyond

In this hands-on workshop you will learn how Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots curriculum makes it easy for educators to mentor young people to lead change in their communities by mapping needs, collaborating with stakeholders, and designing practical solutions in the form of campaigns. You'll learn how to guide your students in a community mapping activity so they can identify genuine community needs and understand the positive impact young people can make both locally and abroad!

Global Studies Meets STEAM

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics), PBL (problem-based learning) and Global Studies are all valid frameworks for 21st century education. Yet these approaches can seem abstract, and often compete for priority and resources. This session will begin by examining proven strategies for incorporating interdisciplinary STEAM activities into global studies through project-based learning.

Designing a plan to drive your global mission forward? If you have ever had an idea for a trip or project, this interactive and teacher-led session will provide strategies to earn quick wins. Come join us in helping you build a team around your project by examining available resources and finding local community networks to answer those critical questions.

From Reactive to Proactive: Positive and Productive Engagement with Policymakers

The evolving education landscape has fostered authentic opportunities for greater inclusion of educators in policy discourse. Indeed, there is an increased need for educators’ perspectives to be solicited and included in policymaking discussions and decisions in general, specifically in the arena of global education. This interactive session will present successful, collaborative and productive educator-policymaker partnerships and experiences to support global education, and will explore strategies, skills and dispositions necessary to succeed in future endeavors.
